About Samburu
Samburu National Reserve and the adjacent Shaba and Buffalo Springs reserves form one of Kenya's most dramatic and distinctive wilderness areas. Located in Kenya's arid north, this is a landscape of rocky hills, ancient doum palms, and the life-giving Ewaso Nyiro River — utterly unlike the green savannas of the south. Samburu is the home of the Samburu Special Five: five endemic species found nowhere else in Kenya — the Reticulated Giraffe, Grevy's Zebra, Gerenuk (the long-necked 'giraffe antelope'), Beisa Oryx, and Somali Ostrich. These unique animals, combined with lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and more than 500 bird species, make Samburu a world-class wildlife destination. The Samburu people — cousins of the Maasai and equally proud pastoralists — add a rich cultural dimension. Their colourful ceremonies, warrior traditions, and handcrafted beadwork are a window into one of East Africa's most remarkable cultures.
