Depart Nairobi at 7:00 AM for the scenic 5–6 hour drive (250 km) southeast to Tsavo West National Park, Kenya's largest park and one of the world's greatest wildlife sanctuaries. Arrive mid-morning and check in at Kilaguni Serena Safari Lodge or Finch Hattons Luxury Camp — Kenya's oldest game lodge, dramatically positioned overlooking a waterhole where elephant herds gather throughout the day. After lunch, embark on your first afternoon game drive through Tsavo West's volcanic landscapes. Visit Mzima Springs, where crystal-clear water wells up through ancient lava rock to create a shimmering pool alive with hippos, crocodiles, and dozens of bird species — a raised underwater viewing chamber lets you observe them from below the waterline. Return to the lodge for dinner as the waterhole fills with elephants, buffalo, and zebra at dusk.
